Obama embodies King's dream and his struggle

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will lead the civil rights pioneers of today and two of his presidential predecessors Wednesday in a celebrative but solemn commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech of yesteryear, saluting his fight for equal opportunity.

Large crowds thronged to the National Mall and the Lincoln Memorial where King, with a soaring, rhythmic oratory and a steely countenance, pleaded with Americans to come together to stomp out racism and create a land of opportunity for all.

Slate-gray skies and a light drizzle greeted the earliest arrivals for an observance that seemed likely to take on a more formal, serious tone, than a commemorative rally last Saturday. People eager to get a close-up view of Obama and former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton clustered at a security checkpoint. And National Guard troops were arrayed along fence lines encircling the Mall from the World War II Memorial to the Lincoln Memorial.

The scheduled appearance later Wednesday of Obama, the first African-American president, was certain to embody the fulfilled dreams of hundreds of thousands who rallied there in 1963. Obama has not often talked publicly about racial issues in the time he has been president. He did, however, talk at some length about the challenges he faced as a young black male as he discussed the case of Trayvon Martin, the Florida teen-ager killed in a confrontation with neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman.

When Obama took office in January 2009, he had broken through barriers that many before him could only approach. But his presidency has been marred by racist backlash and his administration has found itself still taking on battles thought won, such as ensuring equal access to the voting booth.

Obama's speech was set to follow an organized ringing of church bells at mid-afternoon, about the same time of day that King, his jaw squared and his turning, delivered his clarion call for equal rights. Obama was being joined at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial by Carter and Clinton. Other luminaries include Lynda Bird Johnson Robb, daughter of President Lyndon Johnson, who signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., a longtime leader in the civil rights battles.

At an interfaith service, the Rev. Bernice King opened the celebration. King said that her father is often remembered as a freedom fighter for equal rights and human rights. But she said he was most importantly a man of faith.

"He was a pastor, he was a prophet, he was a faith leader," she said. "It was that faith and the spirit of God that infused that movement."

King's eldest son, Martin Luther King III, said blacks can rightfully celebrate his father's life and work but much more work lies ahead.

He bemoaned "staggering unemployment" among black males age 18 to 30 and said he fears too many blacks still "are first judged by t heir color and then the content of their character."

Preceding the speeches was a march featuring a replica of a transit bus that civil rights leader Rosa Parks rode when she refused to give up her seat to a white man in 1955.

Obama considers the 1963 march a "seminal event" and part of his generation's "formative memory." A half-century after the march, he said, is a good time to reflect on how far the country has come and how far it still has to go. In an interview Tuesday on Tom Joyner's radio show, Obama said he imagines that King "would be amazed in many ways about the progress that we've made." He listed advances such as equal rights before the law, an accessible judicial system, thousands of African-American elected officials, African-American CEOs and the doors that the civil rights movement opened for Latinos, women and gays.

"I think he would say it was a glorious thing," he said.

But Obama noted that King's speech was also about jobs and justice.

"When it comes to the economy, when it comes to inequality, when it comes to wealth, when it comes to the challenges that inner cities experience, he would say that we have not made as much progress as the civil and social progress that we've made, and that it's not enough just to have a black president, it's not enough just to have a black syndicated radio show host," the president said.

King's son was interviewed on NBC's "Today" show.

Yikes! Brandy Performs to an Empty Stadium

Yikes! Brandy Performs to an Empty Stadium
By Elizabeth Durand

Brandy performs in South Africa (Getty Images)

In retrospect, it seems like someone should have said something sooner.

Brandy was secretly slated to be the surprise grand finale at the Nelson Mandela Sports and Culture Day, but since fans had no idea the singer would be the final act at the end of a packed schedule, almost all of them had left the building by the time she stepped on stage. Oops.

To put it in perspective, the FNB stadium in Soweto, South Africa, holds 90,000 guests and had been packed the entire day. When Brandy came out for her big moment, however, only 40 people remained. Oh, and reportedly, the lights were on (which was probably one of the reasons guests thought this shindig was done).

"Brandy performed to an empty stadium. With the stadium lights on," local musician Kabomo tweeted.

Other event-goers shared Kabomo's shock. Twitter user Crazy Girl Tutu (how we love that name), shared, "I gave up the min I saw the empty stadium. Brandy performing for the chairs!"

But Dawn Ngwenya thought Brandy had at least one fan left, tweeting, "Well Brandy is going to perform for herself and Mbaks only. Stadium now empty." Mbacks refers to Fikile Mbacks, South Africa's minister of sport, who likely had advance warning that the star would be showing up.

Faced with an empty stadium awash in light, Brandy didn't stick around long either. "People didn't know there was a concert after the games. No one knew Brandy was around. Maybe a 40 people audience," Kabomo shared on the social media site. "She sulked after two songs and walked off."
To be honest, we can't really blame her. And while we're fairly certain Brandy won't be running back to perform in South Africa again anytime soon, we also have a hunch that next time she does, people will know about it.

Divo of The Day “Wentworth Miller” (8/22/13)

Wentworth Earl Miller III was born on June 2, 1972. He is an American actor, model, screenwriter and producer. Wentworth rose to stardom following his role as Michael Scofield in the Fox television series Prison Break. He made his screenwriting debut with the 2013 horror film Stoker.

Wentworth is of multiethnic origin. His father is of African-American, Jamaican, English, German, Jewish, and Cherokee background, and his mother is of Russian, French, Dutch, Syrian, and Lebanese ancestry.

"My father is black and my mother is white. Therefore, I could answer to either, which kind of makes me a racial Lone Ranger, at times, caught between two communities". He has stated.

Wentworth publicly came out as gay in August 2013, when he posted a letter on GLAAD's website declining an invitation to attend a film festival in Russia—Saint Petersburg International Film Festival—citing the recent violent treatment of homosexuals in areas of Russia, seen as a result of enacted laws against "homosexual propaganda”.

The Sentinels are coming!

"X-Men" fans were thrilled to learn at Comic-Con that The Sentinels robots would be appearing in the next film, "X-Men: Days of Future Past." Now, we can get an in depth look at them on a newly launched Trask Industries website (http//:www.trask-industries.com) from Fox.

http://youtu.be/92YBR9gEyYI

A follow-up to both 2006 "X-Men: The Last Stand" & 2011 "X-Men: First Class," Bryan Singer's "X-Men: Days of Future Past" splits time between 1973 and a future year. Patrick Stewart, James McAvoy, Ian McKellan, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, and Anna Paquin are among the cast members of both films set to reprise their roles (yes, we'll see both Stewart and McAvoy as Professor Xavier).

Stewart has described the time-bending epic as the "'X-Men' of all 'X-Men' pictures."

Celebrating the company's 50th anniversary, the Trask site is chock full of interesting tidbits, facts, and images, including one of a Sentinel at President Ronald Reagan's inauguration. There's info about founder Bolivar Trask (played by "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage, as well as a self-congratulatory video about all the great work the company has done over the years.

The promotional footage (rather ominously) notes, "As we celebrate five decades of achievement, we also bid farewell to regular production of the Mark I and shift our efforts to full-time manufacturing of the Mark X our first complete overhaul of the Sentinel line.

Aside from the robots, the site also revealed that the X-Gene Inhibitor Collar, a device in the comics that blocks mutant abilities, will apparently be making an appearance in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past.’ Of course, there are tons more goodies that await to be dug up, including more info on Trask Industries, but you can get your first look at Peter Dinklage as Bolivar Trask, as well as the first official photos of the Sentinels.

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ stars both casts of the original ‘X-Men’ films and ‘First Class,’ adapting the famous comic book story of the same name for the big screen. After the world is overrun by mutant-killing Sentinel robots, Wolverine must go back in time to warn the X-Men of the life-altering event that sets his apocalyptic future into motion. ."

(Side-Bar) In the comics, Trask also has a time-traveling mutant daughter, Tanya, who’s tangled up with some of the weirder parts of the Marvel Multiverse, but if I’m going to talk about Tanya, I’m going to have to talk about Earth-811, and the Askani cult, and the hellish mess that is the Summers/Grey chronology, and then this article will be 10,000 words long and we’ll all still be confused.

Alexander Skarsgård Goes Full Frontal Nude

Alexander Skarsgård Goes Full Frontal Nude on True Blood’s Season Six Finale
By Joyce Chen for US Weekly

A vampire got fully naked full frontal, in fact by the end of Sunday night's episode. Alexander Skarsgård, who plays True Blood's resident bad-boy vampire extraordinaire Eric Northman, shed his clothing for a revealing and critical scene on the HBO series' season six finale on Sunday; August 18, 2013

The chiseled 6'4" Swedish actor literally lit up the screen during the explosive episode after his character Eric burst into flames while enjoying a good book in snowy Sweden completely in the buff.

Though a few choice flames and creative editing helped to shield bits and pieces of Skarsgard's bits and pieces, the 36 year old actor still showed off a substantial portion of his man parts as he leapt off the chaise lounge chair and dashed toward the camera.

The camera cut before his fate was completely sealed, though fans speculate that there is little chance that Skarsgård character could have survived his spontaneous combustion. So what caused Eric's sudden fiery conundrum?

Well let’s see, earlier in the episode, fellow bad boy vampire Warlow (Rob Kazinsky) was in hot pursuit of Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) to make her his faerie vampire bride. Though he was persistent even at one point holding Sookie in a wrestling hold a turn of events led Sookie's brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten) to drive a stake through his heart, killing him for good.

With Warlow's death, all of the vampires appear to lose their ability to live in the daylight though, fortunately for the vamps in Bon Temps, it's nighttime at the moment of Warlow's death, so they are unaffected.

Alexander Skarsgard's character, Eric, however, is on the other side of the globe and catching a few rays in Sweden and thereby suffers a fiery fate.

The Friendship of Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Dandridge

 Marilyn Monroe

I find it interesting that in ‘none of the biographies of Marilyn Monroe does it mention that she was very good friends with black actress Dorothy Dandridge.

Dorothy Dandridge

Dorothy Dandridge and James Dean were also very good friends.

 James Dean

Dorothy considered James Dean a ‘play brother’ to her. Marilyn and James tried to shield Dorothy from racism.

 Desi Arnez

After Dorothy would finish performing with Desi Arnez and his band in Hollywood, she would call Marilyn and they would talk for hours about their careers, problems with men and racism in Hollywood.

Ava Gardner

Dorothy Dandridge, Marilyn Monroe and another black friendly actress, Ava Gardner often went to parties together.

Marilyn and Dorothy also got a kick out of both their first names and last names started with the same initial.

Marilyn never tried to hide her friendship with Dorothy. It was so unpopular for whites to have black friends during segregation that white media outlets refused to report on their friendship, even if they were peers in the same field. This may be why biographers aren't familiar with their association.

Marlon Brando

Actor Marlon Brando was extremely attracted to Dorothy Dandridge and shocked an audience when he kissed Dandridge on the mouth during an awards ceremony. Interracial mixing in Hollywood; was unheard of in the 1950’s and was looked down upon.

   President John F. Kennedy

Marilyn Monroe was very ‘black friendly’ and it’s rumored that she tried to talk President John F. Kennedy into during more for civil rights before her death.

Ironically, both Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Dandridge would die in a similiar fashion. Both died of accidental pill overdoses.

Tribute: Elvis Presley (1935-1977)

Elvis Aaron Presley, was born on January 8, 1935 and passed away on August 16, 1977. Elvis was an American singer, musician and actor. He was one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century; he is often referred to as "The King of Rock & Roll", or simply, "The King".

Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and at the age of 13, he moved with his family to Memphis, Tennessee. His music career began there in 1954, when he started to work with Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun Records. Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black. Elvis was an early popularize of rockabilly, an up-tempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country music and rhythm and blues. Elvis' first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel", released in January 1956, was a #1 hit in the US. He became the leading figure of rock and roll after a series of network television appearances and chart-topping records. His energized interpretations of songs and sexually provocative performance style, combined with a singularly potent mix of influences across color lines that coincided with the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement, made him enormously popular—and controversial.

In November 1956, he made his film debut in Love Me Tender. In 1958 he was drafted into military service: He resumed his recording career two years later, producing some of his most commercially successful work before devoting much of the 1960s to making Hollywood movies and their accompanying soundtrack albums, most of which were critically derided. In 1968, following a seven-year break from live performances, he returned to the stage in the acclaimed televised comeback special, Elvis, which led to an extended Las Vegas concert residency and a string of highly profitable tours. In 1973, Presley was featured in the first globally broadcast concert via satellite, Aloha from Hawaii. Several years of prescription drug abuse severely deteriorated his health, and he died in 1977 at the age of 42.

Presley is one of the most celebrated musicians of 20th-century. Commercially successful in many genres, including pop, blues and gospel, he is the best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music. Elvis was nominated for 14 Grammys and won three, receiving the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36. He has been inducted into multiple music halls of fame.

Tribute: Alexander McQueen (1969 - 2010)

Lee Alexander McQueen, was born on March 17, 1969 and passed away on February 11, 2010. Alexander was a British fashion designer and couturier. He is known for having worked as chief designer at Givenchy from 1996 to 2001 and for founding his own Alexander McQueen label. His achievements in fashion earned him four British Designer of the Year awards (1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003), as well as the CFDA's International Designer of the Year award in 2003

McQueen was openly gay and said he realized his sexual orientation when he was six years old. He told his family when he was 18 and, after a rocky period, they accepted his sexuality. He described coming out at a young age by saying, "I was sure of myself and my sexuality and I've got nothing to hide. I went straight from my mother's womb onto the gay parade".

In the summer of 2000, McQueen had a marriage ceremony with his partner George Forsyth, a documentary filmmaker, on a yacht in Ibiza. The marriage was not official, as same-sex marriage in Spain was not legal then. The relationship ended a year later and McQueen and Forsyth maintained a close friendship.

McQueen received press attention after the May 2007 suicide of international style icon Isabella Blow. Rumours were published that there was a rift between McQueen and Blow at the time of her death, focusing on McQueen's under-appreciation of Blow.

McQueen's death was announced on the afternoon of February 11, 2010. That morning, his housekeeper found him hanging in his home on Green Street, London W1. The Paramedics were called and they pronounced him dead at the scene.

Just days before McQueen’s death London Fashion Week, though he was not scheduled to appear there, and nine days after the death of his mother, Joyce, 75, from cancer. David LaChapelle, a friend of the designer, said that McQueen "was doing a lot of drugs and was very unhappy" at the time of his death.

"Look after my dogs, sorry, I love you, Lee."
McQueen left a note saying

The Metropolitan Police stated that the death was not suspicious, but did not confirm that the death was a suicide. On February 17, 2010, Westminster Coroner's Court was told that a post-mortem examination found that McQueen's death was due to asphyxiation and hanging. The inquest was adjourned until April 28, 2010, where McQueen's death was officially recorded as suicide. McQueen, who had been diagnosed with mixed anxiety and depressive disorder, took an overdose prior to hanging himself. He had taken drug overdoses in May and July 2009. Prior to hanging himself with his "favourite brown belt", the inquest recorded that he had slashed his wrists with a ceremonial dagger and a meat cleaver. Coroner Dr. Paul Knapman reported finding "a significant level of cocaine, sleeping pills, and tranquilisers in the blood samples taken after the designer's death."

On behalf of Lee McQueen's family, Alexander McQueen [the company] today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee's family. Lee's family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.

"RIP mumxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx."
McQueen wrote on his Twitter page on February 3, 2010, saying that his mother had died the day before.

"Awful week"
McQueen Twitted four days later.

He also wrote that he had had an outing with friends and said, "Friends have been great", adding: "Now I have to somehow pull myself together". His mother's funeral took place on February 12, 2010. McQueen is survived by his father, three sisters, and two brothers.

McQueen's funeral took place on February 25, 2010 at St. Paul's Church, Knightsbridge, West London. His ashes were later scattered on the Isle of Skye.

A memorial was held for McQueen at St. Paul's Cathedral on September 20, 2010. It was attended by Björk, Kate Moss, Sarah Jessica Parker, Naomi Campbell, Stella McCartney and Anna Wintour amongst 2,500 other invited guests. On February 18, 2010, Robert Polet, the president and chief executive of the Gucci Group, announced that the Alexander McQueen business would carry on without its founder and creative director.

The BBC reported that McQueen had reserved £50,000 ($82,000) of his wealth for his pet dogs so they could live in the lap of luxury for the rest of their lives. He also bequeathed £100,000 ($164,315) each to four different charities; these include the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in south London, and the Blue Cross animal welfare charity in Burford, Oxfordshire.
